Yoga Classes in Amsterdam
At The Breathing Space in Amsterdam West, we offer breath-centered yoga classes for all levels and life stages.
Rooted in the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition, our offerings include Mysore-style practice, led Vinyasa, modified Ashtanga, Restorative, Yin, and Gentle flow. Whether you're brand new to yoga, recovering from injury, or deepening your long-term practice, our classes are guided with personal attention, adaptability, and a grounding in tradition.
Vinyasa Yoga (All levels)
A dynamic, breath-led class inspired by the Ashtanga Vinyasa and Vinyasa Krama traditions. You’ll move through sun salutations and postures held to build strength, mobility, and presence. Each session is grounded in Ujjayi breathing, with thoughtful sequencing and hands-on support to meet you where you are. Modifications are always offered.
We offer fundamentals, all-levels, and experienced variations—plus a special Sunday morning Vinyasa class that begins with a short, seated reflection exploring yoga philosophy in daily life (affectionately known in our community as Yoga Church).
Mysore Style Ashtanga (All levels)
Mysore is the traditional method of learning Ashtanga Yoga—self-paced, breath-centered, and deeply personal. In this class, you practice a set sequence at your own rhythm within a quiet group setting, receiving one-on-one guidance, hands-on support, and individualized instruction from the teacher.
This approach builds independence, consistency, and deep embodiment. Beginners are welcome and taught progressively; experienced practitioners receive tailored refinements.
Mysore is designed as a regular (often daily) practice. One rest day per week is recommended, and moon days are observed—practice is paused on new and full moons.

Ashtanga Modified Primary Series (All levels)
This class offers a breath-centered, approachable version of the Ashtanga Primary Series. Postures and transitions are adapted to support a wide range of practitioners—some seated poses are omitted, and vinyasas may be simplified.
Perfect for newer students curious about the method, or experienced practitioners seeking a more sustainable approach. You may feel unsure at first, and that’s completely okay—we all start somewhere. Come as you are, and let your breath guide you through.
Ashtanga Led Primary Series (Mixed levels)
This is a traditional led practice of the Ashtanga Primary Series, guided in both English and Sanskrit. Depending on the students present, the class may include the full series, half primary, or a modified sequence.
While all levels are welcome, this class is best suited to those familiar with at least part of the Ashtanga sequence. Beginners who are curious are welcome—just let the teacher know. You may feel a little lost at first, and that’s part of the learning. Everyone starts somewhere.
Ashtanga Modified (Advanced Beginner & Up)
This class breaks down key postures and transitions from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system with a focus on alignment, breath, and energetic awareness. Often taught in a slower, workshop-style format, it’s ideal for students wanting to deepen their understanding, explore adaptations, or work with injury or long-term limitations.
Expect detailed exploration of posture families from the Primary and intermediate series. While not recommended for complete beginners—this class is best for practitioners familiar with the Ashtanga method– this class welcomes curious and committed practitioners of all levels who want to explore the system with care and intention.
Gentle Vinyasa (All levels)
This class offers a slower, breath-centered flow to help release tension and restore balance. With mindful transitions and plenty of support, it’s ideal for anyone needing a softer approach—after a long day, during moon days, or while navigating recovery, fatigue, or hormonal shifts.
Gentle Vinyasa is a beautiful introduction for those unfamiliar with dynamic yoga or returning to movement after time away and a supportive space for beginners, or anyone looking to complement more dynamic practices with something spacious and grounding.
Restorative Yoga (All levels)
Restorative Yoga uses props to support the body in positions of ease and comfort, creating the conditions for deep rest and healing. Rooted in the Judith Hanson Lasater method, this practice focuses on opening, not stretching—shifting the body into parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) mode.
Each class includes only a few fully supported postures, allowing time and space to settle. No experience is needed—just bring socks, layers, and a willingness to slow down. In today’s busy world, this is yoga for your nervous system.
Yin Yoga (All levels)
Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative practice where postures are held for 2–8 minutes, inviting focused attention on breath, sensation, and stillness. This class may help release deep-seated tension—particularly for those with limited mobility or stiffness.
The environment is quiet and minimalist—no music, gentle cues, and optional hands-on assists. Yin can be a helpful complement to more active forms of yoga, offering time to slow down and observe. All levels are welcome.
Private Yoga Sessions (1:1 support)
Private yoga offers one-on-one attention for students seeking personalized guidance. Whether you're rehabilitating after injury, deepening your practice, navigating a health condition, or just prefer a quieter space, these sessions are tailored to your body, goals, and breath.
Each session is designed in conversation with you—respecting your experience, needs, and level of mobility. Breath is always at the center.

The Listening Space (Monthly Community Circle)
The Listening Space is a free monthly gathering for yoga students and seekers to come together in honest reflection. Whether you're new to yoga or years into your journey, this circle offers space to explore questions, struggles, insights, and shared experience—through open dialogue and svadhyaya (self-study).
We begin with a short reading or prompt, then open the space for conversation and connection. All are welcome.
