Mysore-Style Practice at The Breathing Space

What is mysore-style yoga?

Mysore-style yoga is a unique and personal way to learn and practice Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Rather than following a led class, each student practices a set sequence of postures at their own pace, with individual guidance from a teacher. You’re not expected to know the sequence or “get it right” — we’re here to teach and support you, step by step.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a long-time practitioner, this format allows you to develop a steady, breath-centered practice that fits your body, your life, and your needs.

What to expect:

  • Personalized guidance from an experienced teacher

  • Practice at your own pace — from 30 minutes to 2 hours

  • Beginners and advanced students practicing side-by-side

  • A supportive, welcoming community

  • A chance to truly connect with your breath, your body, and yourself

Why “mysore-style”?

Named after the city of Mysore in India where this tradition began, this is how Ashtanga yoga was originally taught — one-to-one, in a group setting. You learn progressively, building a strong foundation while being encouraged and supported every step of the way.

At The Breathing Space, we offer this style as a daily practice with one rest day per week. We also rest on the full and new moons, when we offer a Moon Day Restorative Yoga class instead of Mysore.

You don’t need to memorize anything, be flexible, or have prior experience to start. Just show up as you are. We’ll meet you there.

Is it right for you?

If you’re looking for a way to:

  • Build a sustainable, breath-led yoga practice

  • Receive personalized attention and support

  • Be part of a warm, committed community

  • Deepen your connection to yourself

…then Mysore-style practice might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

We believe in showing up — not in being perfect. Whether you come for five sun salutations or your full sequence, it’s the act of showing up that matters most.

New to mysore-style practice?

You don’t need to take a course or know anything in advance to begin — we welcome new students into the Mysore room all the time, and we’re here to guide you step by step from the moment you arrive.

That said, if you’re someone who appreciates a little more structure when starting something new, our Introduction to Mysore Course might be a great fit. It’s designed for complete beginners and offers a short series of small-group sessions where you’ll learn the foundations of this style alongside others who are just starting out.

Think of it as a friendly on-ramp — not a requirement, but a helpful option if you’d like extra support as you begin.
